Baby Sagini’s cousin sentenced to 40 years in prison

Baby Sagini’s cousin, aunt and grandmother sentenced.

Alex Maina Ochogo, the main suspect in the assault of Baby Junior Sagini, has been sentenced to 40 years behind bars.

Alex, who is the cousin of the three-year-old child, was found guilty of gouging out the eyes of the minor in December 2022 at Ikuruma Village in Kisii County.

A magistrate at Kisii Law Court also handed baby Sagini’s aunt Pacifica Nyakerario 10 years jail term and his grandmother Rael Mayaka, 5 years jail term.

Baby Sagini is said to have been kidnapped for six hours, early December and was later found on his uncle’s maize plantation in Marani, Kisii County.

The three suspects had on January 18 been charged with attempted murder which later changed to causing grievous bodily harm according to Section 4 of the Penal Code after Prosecutor Hillary Kaino made an application to the court to amend the charges.

During a virtual cross-examination in March, Sagini said that his grandmother gouged out his eyes using her hands and dumped him at a maize plantation.

Unfortunately, doctors ruled that the young child, who fell prey to his attackers while fetching water at a nearby river, will remain blind for the rest of his life.
