Any motorized vehicle that is not equipped with number plates is not permitted to drive on Kenyan roads.

How to apply for a new number plate in Kenya

The Registrar of Motor Vehicles is in charge of car registration and licensing. 
So, what documents are required for new license plates? 
When applying for new number plate, you will need the following documents if you have recently imported new car.
  • Copy of national ID of the vehicle owner or a valid Passport.
  • KRA Pin certificate Import entry form (Form 63)
  • Airway Bill
  • Insurance cover Duty and VAT receipts
  • Import Declaration Form (IDF)
  • Foreign log book translated into English
  • Port Release Order
  • Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR) if the vehicle is forcommercial use.
  • Foreign Vehicle Receipt/License
  • Clean Report of Findings (CRF)
  • A temporary Importation Document (Form C44A or C44)
  • A duly filled Form personally signed by the importer
  • Authority to enter goods for home use from the Commissioner of Customs & Excise
  • Road manifest or Carnet de Passages in the case of vehicles imported by road.
After you’ve double-checked that you have all of the necessary documentation, you can apply for new license plate. 
The vehicle will be registered and new number plates will be supplied if the registrar accepts your request.
